LANSING – State Representative Harold Haugh (D-Roseville) on Tuesday voted for a plan that aims to increase participation in hunting and fishing by allowing the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to discount certain licenses or applications. The plan passed the House on a vote of 105-1.
"Hunting and fishing are an important part of what makes our way of life here in Michigan so special," Haugh said. "Hunters and anglers from around the country join Michigan residents in pumping millions of dollars into our economy. During tough times like these, we can't afford to lose any of those dollars. This plan will help ensure this tradition remains strong in Michigan."
The House plan will allow the fees for hunting and fishing licenses or applications to be reduced based on the fluctuation of the population of various species throughout the year. The DNR also will have the ability to package different licenses together or discount licenses in order to entice more Michigan residents into hunting and fishing and enjoying the great outdoors.
"Hunting is a great way to experience Michigan's beautiful outdoors while spending quality time with family and friends," Haugh said. "It's a fun pastime that also helps to create jobs and provides income to local communities. Passing this plan will help more people participate in this time-honored tradition."
